  12.   Justice White, concurring in the judgment.
  13.   Jackson v. Virginia, 443 U. S. 307 (1979), required the
  14. federal courts to deny the requested writ of habeas corpus
  15. if, under the Jackson standard, there was sufficient
  16. evidence to support West's conviction, which, as the Court
  17. amply demonstrates, see ante, at 16-18, there certainly
  18. was.
